While it’s absurd to imagine that anyone can go from passenger to pilot without the appropriate investment, it is unfortunately an all too common experience for team members becoming people leaders.

A person spends most of their career as a subject matter expert, being measured and rewarded according to one set of capabilities. Then, because of those capabilities – or just through longevity – they find themselves thrust behind the controls of the plane (team) and, without any support or training, told to ‘go lead’.
